Pregnancy is one of the most amazing experiences that any woman can experience. Are you coming towards the end of your pregnancy? Unfortunately this phase is also one of the most uncomfortable experiences for the mother to be. With the added weight of a full term baby, backaches and frequent toilet visits are very common. Even sleeping is becoming more difficult. You may be tempted to look for ways to self induce labor. Every mother to be wants the most natural and safe remedies during her pregnancy. Here are 5 steps to help you induce naturally.
The two main hormones released during labor are oxytocin and prostaglandins. Extinction acts to stimulate uterine contractions whilst prostaglandins act to soften the cervix in preparation for birth. In hospitals you will normally be induced using a synthetic version of oxytocin. To induce naturally you need to stimulate the production of these hormones.
1. Nipple stimulation produces the hormone oxytocin. This hormone is responsible for stimulating uterine contractions. Stimulate your nipples by rolling them between your thumb and forefingers for 2 minutes and rest for 3 minutes. Repeat this for 20 minutes.
2. Having sexual intercourse or an orgasm produces both oxytocin and prostaglandins. These hormones also act to stimulate uterine contractions and potentially induce labor naturally.
3. Spicy food stimulates digestion and increases the amount of prostaglandin production. You may want to stay off spicy foods if you suffer from heartburn or stomach ulcers.
4. Castor oil is often mixed with juice or food to stimulate prostaglandins leading to uterine contractions. Excessive castor oil can cause diarrhea.
5. Acupressure is proven to be one of the safest and most effective ways to induce naturally. This works by stimulating various points that cause the production of both oxyctocin and prostaglandins in the body. Stimulating these points also has a descending action on the fetus causing the baby to engage and the cervix to soften. Acupressure techniques are very simple, non invasive and can be carried out by you or your partner. Massage the points using a small circular motion for 1-5 minutes a few times a day.
