There is nothing more frustrating than having to deal with a “late-comer” when it comes to pregnancy. The truth is that if you are dealing with a past due pregnancy, you aren’t alone. Over 70% of all babies are delivered late. I know that that doesn’t help much with your swollen feet, lower back problems or general overall tiredness right now but did you know that there are some natural methods that you can use that will help bring on labor without having to deal with a “scheduled” labor induction at your local hospital? And the good news is that most of these methods are tried and proven to work.
The number one thing you want to do to induce labor is to do things that will either help soften the cervix or will work to produce uterine contractions. The #1 cause of a late pregnancy is that the cervix is ripening fast enough.
- Evening Primrose Pills- Evening primrose doesn’t induce labor like it was once believed. Instead, it works because it releases prostaglandin, a chemical that is also found in semen (more on that in a second). Prostaglandin helps to soften up to the cervix in preparation for labor. You can start taking this pill fairly early in your pregnancy (as early as 34 weeks) and it can be taken orally. As you start to get into the later stages of pregnancy, you can insert the pill directly into your vagina. Do this at night before you go to bed. Taking Evening Primrose Pills early can help ripen the cervix quicker making for a shorter labor.
- Sex- If you are in the mood (I personally wasn’t), then sex is probably the quickest and most fun way to induce labor. While it isn’t a slam dunk every time, the secret is in the semen. Just like evening primrose pills, semen contains prostaglandin, which aids in preparing the body for labor by softening up the cervix. Semen has the most prostaglandin than any herb, pill or extract.
- Castor Oil- Many mid-wives swear by castor oil as a natural way to induce labor. What castor oil does is cause spasms in the intestines which surrounds the uterine wall. In turn, these spasms help stimulate the uterus to contract. The downside to using castor oil is it is foul, taste wise and will cause you to have to go to the bathroom in less than 3 hours.
Did YOU Know?
My first baby was absolutely murder during labor. She was a week late as it was and the labor lasted for 15 hours. The next time I became pregnant I was so mad at my husband that I didn’t talk to him for a week! A friend turned me on to maternity acupressure which made for an easy pregnancy and an even easier labor. I highly recommend maternity acupressure. It will not only help bring on labor quickly but will shorten your labor as well.
