Inducing labor with acupressure provides a natural, in-home alternative to induction done at the hospital (not to mention cheaper). Acupressure not only stimulates labor, but it also helps lessen labor pains, speed up the birthing process, and is safe for both you and your baby. It can also greatly increase your success on having a VBAC. But it is a good idea before you induce to know when and how to use this technique, or it will not be effective.
The best times to induce labor using acupressure points is when you are already in labor to strengthen contractions and speed up the birthing process, if your water has already broken but you have not gone into labor, or if you are overdue and want to stimulate contractions naturally. When done correctly, using pressure points naturally induces labor at home, rather than by force at the hospital.
It is very important to understand not all pressure points work for everyone. You should be sure to check with your midwife or obstetrician before you attempt to induce labor using acupressure. NEVER use acupressure to induce labor before it is deemed safe for you to give birth. If your midwife or doctor is unfamiliar with using acupressure to induce labor, you should get a second opinion.
Pressure points can be found on your hands, ankles, bladder, spleen and other places. These points are naturally sensitive and feel much like you a poking a bruise when they are touched. They should not be painful, just sensitive. To give you an idea of what they should feel like, try to find these two:
o In the webbing between your thumb and forefinger.
o Two inches above the inside of your ankle bone.
It is not only important to do your research on how to induce labor using acupressure, but be sure of when to induce labor. Be sure you are completely informed before you attempt this.
A word of advice: be sure to have everything packed and ready to head to the hospital before you begin, in case things move much quicker than you were expecting. Acupressure generally takes 24-48 hours, but in some cases has taken much less time. Be sure to inform whoever will be driving you to be ready, too.
I wish the best of luck for you and your growing family!
